Who is Roxanne?

katelm637958382937216b0169324c74187cc3_1223259537Kate_Phizackerley: Or how to improve your song lenses

I invite any of you who have lyric or song lenses that aren’t really getting much traffic or attention to take a look at Who is Roxanne? by Giant Squid lensmaster Kate-Phizackerley.

Kate-Phizackerley did a tremendous job of showcasing one of her favorite songs in a way that is both informative and interesting to read.

A while back, many of us were creating song and lyric lenses by our favorite artists.  Why not improve these song lenses by adding a bit of personal charm.  Tell us why you chose to make a lens about the song or why you love that particular version of the song over any other.    Share some background information about the song.  Look for and share some obscure versions of the song by using a YouTube.com module.  Start an argument or a discussion about the song with a Duel module.  Is the song a remake; let us know when it was first recorded.  Tell us about the first time you heard the song or why it makes you cry.

Give your lyric lenses a more personal spin and turn you ordinary song lens into something extraordinary.

Who are you Writing Your Lenses For?

giantlogolens2069253_1215758213newgiant4A discussion at the Giant Squid Summer Camp prompted me to address  this this.

The Giants were discussing different uses for the Guestbook Module and it was  mentioned that lensmasters are accustomed to seeing the Guestbook Module placed at the end of a lens and that most Squidoo lensmasters would actually STOP reading a lens as soon as they arrive at a Guestbook Module.

That might  be  true, and it is definitely something that you need to keep in mind when you are  writing lenses specifically for the Squidoo.com community but if you are planning to have your lenses read by the vast online population of people who have never created a lens, you need to realize that they “do not” have any preconceived notions about what a lens should look like, or where a Guestbook Module should appear.   They are visiting your lens because of the unique, interesting, satisfying, and in this social-media-crazed-society, maybe even the interactive quality of  your content.

As a Squidoo lensmaster, I always like to find a Guestbook module at the end of a lens but that doesn’t mean you can’t use one in the middle, like  Bellingham WA, Restaurant Critic or even as the very first module, on your lens, like on  Amish Recipes.

You just need to decide who you’re really writing your lens for, and then design it accordingly.

How Can You Give Back to the Squidoo Community

meganlm5e5757905ee92d91f859ae7ac204c8fe_1243900728mc1At today’s Giant Squid chat a great question was posed by Giant Squid lensmaster LindaJM that I wanted to share with all of you.

LindaJM asked:  “How can we give back to the Squidoo.com community?”

Squidoo’s Editor in Chief, MeganCasey answered:  “Take 2 minutes everyday to find a lens that you like and then post about it somewhere.”

That’s it!  It’s that easy!

Not sure how to promote someone else’s work?

Brag about it, Tweet it, Digg it, feature it on your Facebook page, blog it, email it, talk about it at a forum you visit, or simply IM the url address to your friends.  Show it to your mom or your brother, or your mom’s brother!

If you love Squidoo and want to give back to the Squidoo.com community, do it by donating 2 minutes of your time  promoting someone elses lens each and every day!

And hey, you never know, one day they might just do it back for you!

Finding Good Squidoo.com Group Homes

vegetablegardening10056876bAre your groups suffering because you’re running short of Squid time?

I recently adopted a great Squidoo.com group from a lensmaster who simply didn’t have the time to spare to take care of it anymore.

Have you got a group that’s maybe been a little bit neglected lately?  Are you too busy to give your group all the love and care it deserves?

Instead of deleting that great group url address, why not offer your group to another member of the group?

Chances are if they have a lens (or lenses) in the group already, they are probably passionate about that group’s topic and would love to continue where you’ve left off .

That’s what Flicker did when she offered me her Vegetable Gardening group.

And I’m really glad she did because vegetable gardening is one of my favorite things to do in the whole world.   In fact, prior to my work here at Squidoo, I used to write a micro site called Fresh Cooking from Your Garden.

Another alternative to offering your attention-craving group for adoption might be to share leadership of the group with another lensmaster who already belongs to the group.  After all, two heads are better than one and four hands can certainly speed up the group admission and Headquarter editing process.

If all else fails, you can always visit Squidu.com and post a Group adoption notice in the “Groups” thread there.

Spotlight On Eurosquid

lmd0f47614d5ea214377f64c9f326568bc_1239465649squid Today we turn the SPOTLIGHT on brand new 100 Club Member Eurosquid.   Eurosquid answers questions about successful lens creation,  shares some really great tips and information about his favorite Squidoo lenses.

1. What is your best Squidoo lens making tip?

After making a lens, get feedback from other Squids and improve it. I frequently submit lenses to the “Critique Me” section of Squidu. I get lots of great feedback there. Some have said that this forum should be only for newbies. I strongly disagree. We can all use constructive feedback. I wish more Squids would participate there.

2. What is the very first thing you do AFTER you’ve published a new lens? What is the second thing you do? And why?

The first and most important thing is to get the new lens a few “do follow” (recognized by Google) links from sites outside of Squidoo with high Google Page Rank Status (PR 3 or above). Getting quality links is the best way to get a lens discovered by the search engines such as Google. But many links you can easily get are poor quality or are not recognized by Google. Every Squid should have several places where they can reliably and easily get “do follow” links.

One of my favorites is Lensroll.com. If you are a Giant Squid you can become a contributing author on Valley of the Giants Blog. This is a Blog I have started together with some other Giant Squids which now has Google Page Rank 3. All Giant Squids are invited to join and post there. It is a great way to get free quality links to your Squidoo lens. We now have 10 contributing Giant Squid authors.

3. List 5 things you faithfully do before publishing every new lens.

I can not think of 1 thing that I do faithfully before publishing a new lens. Each lens is a new project.

4. What do you think makes a great lens really great? Is it the design style? The amount of pictures? The writing style? Or is it something else?

A great lens should inform and entertain. It should be a good balance of helpful new, interesting information and “fun factor”. The types of lenses that I and most people usually make can be divided into “Informative Lenses” and “Shopping Lenses”, but I apply this rule to both.

Informative lenses usually have lots of text, but the danger is that they can be overloaded, heavy and boring. To counter this, I never put two text modules adjacent to each other. After a text module I put a photo (the Polaroid modules are great) or a video (don’t use the Youtube modules, use the new video modules they are bigger and look nicer) or an Amazon module or a poll or duel module. I try to include a variety of modules, but I always keep it relevant to the subject matter.

Shopping lenses usually have lots of information about products, but the danger is that they may become too “hard sell”. Never put affiliate links in the introduction module. Avoid having a string of Amazon modules. After every Amazon or selling module, put a photo or a video, etc. I admit to having created lenses which are mostly Amazon modules. But doing many of these kinds of lenses will never get you Giant status.

Then add some HTML to make the lens attractive. For example, putting a colored frame around all of your text is very easy to do. If it is color coordinated to a theme, it can add style to your lens.

My best example of this is my lens Footed Pajamas for Adults. When I first created that lens in February 2008, it did not achieve much success, as it was very basic with several Amazon modules, a few photos and a duel module. Then in October 2008, I went to the “Critique Me” forum in Squidu and requested ideas. Some very smart Squids told me to add more interesting content and gave some great suggestions. I followed their advice. Then I went to the Angels forum and requested blessings which I received. After that the lens rank increased and the lens got a great deal of attention. On 14 November it was selected for the Giant Squid Community Showcase Award. Then 5 December it was selected as Lens of the Day. On 29 December it was selected as Best Shopping Lens of 2008.

What is the secret behind the success of that lens? It has a lot of variety breaking up the shopping modules. For example:

* There are cool fun videos and photos, such as celebrities in footed pajamas.

* There are short bits of information about pajamas sprinkled throughout the lens with the title “Pajama Facts”.

* There is a duel module where many people have expressed their thoughts about adults wearing footed pajamas.

* There is a voting module where people can express what they find interesting about footed pajamas.

* There is a relevant color theme through-out the lens in the text modules and framing many of the photos. Pink and light-blue are traditional pajama colors.

I was fortunate enough to stumble upon a controversial and interesting subject like Footed Pajamas for Adults. Most people do not even realize that they exist, so it was a fun topic to work on. But adding the variety of content, together with the fun visuals is what made this lens successful.

5. When starting a new lens, how much research do you do? Do you follow any type of plan? Or do you just wing it?

This depends on the topic and how complex it is.

One of the challenges when creating a shopping lens is to find a product that will sell. I use several sources to get great ideas for shopping lenses. I wrote a detailed post in Valley of the Giants Blog called “Sources for Successful Squidoo Sales Sites“.

For informative lenses such as my lens about Marilyn Monroe, I do a great deal of research. Wikipedia is the best place to start. But the mistake many people make is to simply copy, or repeat the information in Wikipedia, or they use the Wikipedia module. For my tribute to Marilyn, I read FBI files, watched movies, sorted through Youtube Videos and read through lists of her quotes.

Again, you will notice that, while this is an informative lens, there are never two text modules next to each other. The text is broken up with photos, videos, interactivity, etc. And there is HTML added, to emphasize the first letter of every text module. The mix of information and “fun factor” keeps this lens interesting and not tedious.

6. What is your best advice for SEO?

Get good quality links, as discussed above. This is crucial. Have several sources outside of Squidoo you can reliably turn to in order to get links. This will get your lens quickly found by the search engine and bring targeted traffic to your lens.

7.  What is yur best tip for monetizing a Squidoo lens?

Here is a simple trick most people overlook. Update your highest traffic lenses at least once per month. Why? An up-to-date lens with good traffic has the best chances of earning money due to its lensrank. Currently we are getting paid more than $10 for lenses with lensrank above 2000, and more than $2 for lenses with lensrank above 10,000. If you have several of those, they add up. You can find more information about that in a blog post I wrote on how to earn a few extra dollars from Squidoo.

When creating a lens, research the products you are linking to. After creating a lens, find out what is not working and ask why. Once, in addition to my Amazon modules, I placed several affiliate links to some great looking, relevant products. After a few months, I noticed that, although I had sent a great deal of traffic I had made no sales and earned no commissions. I wrote to the affiliate manager and asked why. She wrote “The problem that I am seeing is that… our price is much higher than the Amazon pricing (we are priced at $82 and they are priced at $74 max with many choices much lower). You are probably getting traffic that is checking out (our products) than back tracking and checking out Amazon“. That probably should have been obvious, but it did not dawn on me until I asked.

8. Please tell us about your favorite and newest lenses.

I enjoyed creating an informative lens about The Broadway Revival of the musical ”Hair“.  It was fun to research it and the songs brought back great memories. The story behind the lens is that I was creating a series of shopping lenses related to hair (electrolysis vs. laser hair removal, Silk’n home laser system, baldness, etc). I was doing the research for the next “hair” related lens when I learned about the ”Hair” Broadway revival. I loved making that lens. I just wish it got more traffic.

My newest fun lens is about Home Hair Removal.

In a way it is similar to the lens about ”Footed Pajamas For Adults’ in that this lens combines three magic things:

* Humor
* Controversy
* Sales

This one is a funny look at hair removal products. It is a bit tricky, because if overdone, it can easily become offensive. Alot of people battle with unwanted body hair. So, the wrong kind of humor can be taken quite personally and evoke the wrong reactions.

To be sure that it did not offend, I posted it in the “Critique Me” section of Squidu and monitored reactions. While there were very valuable comments that helped me to improve it, no one had problems with the humor. So, I hope it is OK. But I will be watching it carefully to see the reactions

Hair Removal is a funny and controversial subject. This is a GREAT combination of factors for a sales lens. As with Footed Pajama, many people do not know that these products exist, so people will learn from it. Also, I have been able to find some great photos and videos for the lens.  I am looking forward to see if, in time, this lens does as well as “Footed Pajamas for Adults.”

My favorite Squidoo lens that I created is “Footed Pajamas for Adults“.  It is a controversial, fun subject. I enjoy the comments that people leave. And of course it was fun to get the Lens of the Day.

But my all time favorite Squidoo Lens, is not mine. It is dc64’s touching lens “Life as a Foster Child“. Deborah had the courage to reveal her deepest memories and her innermost feelings about her tragic childhood. She has taken a very difficult subject and written it with such a gripping style that I have returned to reread it several times. I think that Deborah is one of the most talented writers in Squidoo. Notice the excellent choice of photos, which not only highlight her story but also balance the lens and give the reader a much needed break from a difficult subject. I think that this lens could probably be developed into a book. Any literary agents out there?

Picking Your Amazon Products

Most Giants may already know this but I’ve come across the topic recently and felt that it needed to be addressed.  When it comes to picking and choosing Amazon products for your Squidoo lenses, your personal choices work best!

And when I say make personal choices, I mean that in addition to personally picking your products as opposed to letting the Amazon module choose for you,  you should visit the Amazon.com site to find your favorite products instead of using the search feature (Help me find a product.) on the Squidoo.com Amazon modules.

The search feature on the Amazon modules is good but it can be limited.  When you go directly to Amazon.com to choose your products you’ll be able to add virtually anything and everything that Amazon.com sells.

To add your personally selected product to your lens, you’ll simply need to copy the ASIN number from your chosen product page and add it to the Amazon module on your lens.  You’ll find the ASIN number located in the Product Details section of the Amazon.com page your chosen product is on.  It will look similar to this-  ASIN: B001FB4W0W

This will work for all Amazon Squidoo modules except for the Amazon Search module.  For that one you’ll need to add a keyword or phrase that matches the topic of your lens.

An alternative method is to use the link url from the top of the Amazon.com page where your chosen product is located but I’ve found that this doesn’t always work properly.

Another important thing to keep in mind while choosing Amazon products to offer for sale on your Squidoo lenses is that less can really be more effective.  I’ve found that, unless you are creating a full blown shopping lens, it’s best to offer a few handpicked items that match your topic instead of many similar products.

Take a look at my Best Panini Sandwich Recipes lens as an example.  I only recommend the DeLonghi panini grill because that’s the one I personally use.   Amazon.com sells dozens of panini presses and grills but who would believe me if I said I recommended all of them?  Unless I was some sort of a product tester, I couldn’t possibly have used more than one or two of them in my lifetime.

By only recommending one grill (one that I am very familiar with) I earn my reader’s trust (they are more likely to buy one) and I believe that accounts for a large part of that len’s success.

Spotlight On Lakeerieartists

Today we have a Squid-load of tips for you from Giant lensmaster Lakeerieartists who very kindly answered every question on my Spotlight interview request.  Trust me, you don’t want to miss this!

1.  What is your best Squidoo lens making tip?

Make lenses about topics that you love.  The ideas will flow much better, and you will have fun with it.  Also, you will understand those topics much better and show your enthusiasm.

2.  What is the very first thing you do AFTER you’ve published a new lens? What is the second thing you do? And why?

Look at it in its published form.  Are there typos?  What about the way the modules flow together, do I like that?  Did I leave something out? Is it set up in a way that draws the person into the next section? The second thing is to fix it.  Then I start promoting the lens.  Creating backlinks to establish paths for traffic to come to it.

3.  List 5 things you faithfully do before publishing every new lens.

1-Check for spelling errors.  Very unprofessional.  2-Add tags  3-Add an interactive module—a poll, guestbook, duel  4—Really polish the introduction, turn on the table of contents, and the discovery feature.  5—Publish it, look at it in the published form, then fix errors I see there.  Then I do a final publish.

4.  What do you think makes a great lens really great? Is it the design style? The amount of pictures? The writing style? Or is it something else?

Yes to all those questions, but no as well.  They are all important, but it is the mix of all those features with the care and passion a person puts into the topic of the lens that really makes it great.  You could have all of the above and only have a mediocre lens if it is not put together with care.

5.  When starting a new lens, how much research do you do? Do you follow any type of plan? Or do you just wing it?

This is a bad question for me.  I do a lot of planning in my head, but I decide what topic I want to write on, then plan out how I want to approach it in my head.  Then I look into keywords to see if I can approach it in a way that people will search for it on the internet.  I also look to see what lenses are already written on the topic on Squidoo.  Then I write the lens.  Once I get to actually “putting it on paper”  I just write, then go back and amend.

6.  What is your best advice for SEO?

Learn about SEO as you learn about Squidoo.  Everyone can always learn more about SEO—the rules change constantly.  It also takes time to learn how to write a good lens.  So learn them together.  There is lots of advice out there about SEO—I find that a combination of good keywords, good tags, and self promotion will get you traffic.

7.  What is your best tip for monetizing a lens?

Monetize your lens in such a way that it flows as part of the lens.  Either sell stuff that resonates with your topic or write about what you want to sell.

Please share the link, and the story behind one of your NEWEST and one of your most favorite lenses?

I would love to share with you a brand new project that I literally just started yesterday, which is a blog about one of my groups, Living the Green Organic Lifestyle.  This group is very special and full of terrific eco-friendly ideas of all sorts.  I hope that people will visit both the group and the new Living the Green Organic Lifestyle Blog which will feature the lenses in this group.

My lensography is definitely a milestone lens for me.  I can see where I have come from, and really look at where I want to go with Squidoo in the future. In 2009, my goal is to go back to all of my older lenses and really bring them up to speed.  Also, to get to a total of 300 lenses. I am going to really focus on improving my keyword skills in order to get my lenses to rank faster and higher in Google and other search engines.

Start Thinking About Summer

If you followed my Build a Better Holiday Niche series back in November, you are probably noticing that the lenses you built then, are really starting to gain momentum now.   My own experimental niche topic, Red Kitchen Accessories is doing quite well.

That’s why I strongly suggest you get to work on your summer specific lenses ASAP.  A good three months of promotion goes a long way towards a successful and profitable lens.

Remember that many holiday themes can be recreated for summer time events.  If you made a niche lens about Thanksgiving centerpieces for your dining room table back then, you can easily make a new lens about summer centerpieces now.

If your niche is centered around Holiday toys, you can easily create a new lens based on bubbles, or dodgeball, or water guns now.

Did your Christmas lights niche do well over the holidays?  Make a new one for Outdoor Patriotic Party lighting for the 4th of July or how to create the perfect atmosphere for a luau.

Get summer specific with your chosen topic.

If your niche is dogs, make a lens about doggie sun visors ,or tips for vacationing with your puppy.

If your niche is food, maybe a lens on grill safety, or local restaurants with outdoor seating would make a good lens topic for you - even better give each local outdoor eatery a review lens of its own.

Once you put your mind to it, the ideas become endless!

Have you already got a great warm weather niche?  Why not dig deeper into it.

Link your Summer Make-Up lens to a new one about the best mascara to use in a heat wave, or tell us about the best color lipstick to wear with a tan.

Link your beach lenses to new ones that describe THE most comfortable beach chair and how to keep sand out of your picnic basket.

Don’t have a Squidoo niche?  Learn a great way to start a niche by visiting this post:  Build a Better Holiday Niche,  then take a look at these great summertime topic lenses from GypsyPirate for inspiration!
