I’m Linda Randall and I’m a Giant Squid.

My biggest Squidoo accomplishment so far was in generating traffic to my lenses.

I made little videos for each lens with the URLS in the videos, as well as in the Info section.

My traffic tripled just by doing that!

Usually 24 hours after I’ve uploaded the video on youtube I’ll start posting it on each of my word press blogs then on the Squidoo pages that it’s about.

I use pictures and catchy music along with little jokes thrown in here and there to entice people to watch them.

I started with 8 minute videos and found that they didn’t get too many views.

After doing some research, all viral videos are under 2 minutes long, unless of course you are the comedian Jimmy Kimmel.

His was ten minutes long and it was as funny as hell, so he got away with it!

On my youtube channel I went from 12 views to 18,000 views in less than 2 months!

On Squidoo I have no idea how much traffic it is but it went from around 50 to over 2000 Plus visitors.

I have no idea if that’s weekly , monthly?

I wish they did a stats thing in Squidoo so we could see our traffic from month to month.

I use site meter on my blogs but it’s no longer taking NEW sites.

I think it would be a wonderful tool.

I know we have a 3 month stat counter, but honestly don’t you want to see the whole year?

You feel good when you know that you have succeeded in reaching a goal.

As a webdesigner I was amazed by just how easy and intuitive it was to create a lens.

Since then thanks to Squidoo I’ve been able express myself on things that have been on my to-do list for years; in other words get them out of my system!

Only later did I become aware that you could earn serious money with Squidoo; I still remember the delight I had the first time one of my lens sold an item on Amazon. In fact although I already had experience of Internet Marketing with my other sites Squidoo has taught me many lessons in what works and doesn’t work, what attracts sales and which don’t. It is also very easy to experiment with Squidoo to try different things out. Just recently an American TV Show Dr Oz (America’s Doctor) happened to feature Salt Pipes. The first I knew was when my Salt Pipe lens suddenly started getting much more traffic and started making sales, this only lasted a week but was great fun.

After years of following one Guru’s advice after another for the first time I’ve developed my own strategy I now know where to focus my efforts and that’s all thanks to Squidoo and all the great people on Squidoo!

My main niche is Party Tips…which I have found is a very broad niche. By itself it’s really too broad. So, I’m narrowing it down to party themes, for example Disney Princess. I then take that theme and make lenses about party tips, posters, t-shirts, bedroom decorations, toys, etc. then tie them all together with the Featured Lens module and Lensrolling. Party Tips by itself doesn’t do much, but the very specific lenses with Amazon modules make the money. The possibilities are endless, just choose any subject and make several lenses about that subject. I plan to make more and more and more…

(I didn’t want to jinx it by making plans too early…)

What I really want to do is to write more popular lenses. I love writing about a variety of topics, but it’s less fun if most of them only get one (or fewer) views a week. What’s the point of creating great content if no one will see it?

I’m lucky to have a few lenses that really shine. Local Writer’s Associations of America got that way through a lot of hard work – I’ve managed to get quite a few inlinks over the last couple of years by contacting the organizations on my list. Raffle Fundraising: Raffle Prizes Under $50 became popular through a fortuitous keyword phrase choice (something that I’d like to learn how to reproduce!). Going forward, I’d like to build on these successes, using a combination of improved SEO techniques and linking articles within Squidoo and to outside sites such as Associated Content.

And, of course, as I perfect these techniques I want to continue to share them with others on Squidoo!”

But not everyone starts out that way. In my experience many come into it with some hesitation. It looks big and almost frightening until you get inside and meet some of the folks who quickly show you that they are on your side. They don’t want or expect anything from you except to see you stick around and produce some great lenses.

When starting out as a new Squid many may have little or no internet experience. Others are all too knowing and want to bombard the place with their offers in an effort to influence and/or make sales from the members. But mostly new Squids, as they are called, are here for the fun and enjoyment of producing something with the least amount of effort or cost and, in turn, to feel good inside.

On the top right of some lenses stands a giant’s badge and a yellow star inviting you to find out more about the author. They show that these lensmasters produced 50 good quality lenses that are original in content and worth reading. When they repeat that effort they may get a 100 Club badge which boosts them up even further,

The thrill of receiving notification that you have made the grade is out of this world. It sent shivers through me and brought a tear to my eye. Of course it is hard work, but so is everything that is worthwhile.

As the thrill of that award begins to fade there may come another quick on its heels. It could be a purple star for one of your lenses. These are only given to giants and they mean that you have excelled as so few are given each week and only around 1000 for the year. Wow, you have made something really out of the box and now you get that purple star on the lens to prove it.

No sooner does that thrill begin to fade when another unexpected email tells you that a lens you have created has been chosen as the Lens of the Day. But you don’t have to be a giant to get that award. It can be given to anyone at any time for an outstanding lens. There are only 365 of these given in a year and some recipients have less than ten or so lenses under their belt when they get it.

What it amounts to is this. Squidoo is a place of friendship, help and encouragement. It is a place to hang out and many hardly ever leave, except to sleep. The lenses you build can be promoted outside of Squidoo through social sites, articles, email lists, blogs, traffic exchanges, forums and so on. They also get listed in Search Engines and if keywords are good enough they bring more traffic and also more sales if you are offering products, either your own or as an affiliate..

As you grow in status within Squidoo you make friends and help others in the same way that you were helped. Many ask your advice or send thank you notes to your email. Others ask if you need help to accomplish something. Whatever it is you are never alone wothin this family. That’s why there are over a million or more lenses produced in here by enthusiastic authors many of whom, like me, can’t imagine life without it.

Squidoo is possibly the best place to hang out on the Net. With the encouragement given you begin writing on subjects you never thought possible and the great tools offered free on site make the lenses you create ourstanding in color, theme, design and presentation.. By the way a lens is simply a view of something though your eyes for others to enjoy.”

I had two decisions to make: should I split that account up, and if I did, should I go for giant? I decided to split the account up for administrative reasons as well as SEO ones. Over 300 lenses to one account means that the profile page is very inefficient from an SEO perspective.

My calendar lenses were doing well traffic wise, but I thought they’d likely do better when they were together on a niche profile. (more on the advantages and disadvantages of having several squidoo accounts: Advantages and Disadvantages of having several Squidoo Accounts

So, I decided to split up my account. In fact, I ended up with three squidoo accounts.

For my calendar lenses I knew I’d be able to go for giant: I had about 40 lenses about calendars when I split the two accounts up. I went for giant because for my calendar lenses the 9 link limit is a drag. I want to be able to link to as many versions of a product as I want. Since most of my calendars-affiliate programs are through shareasale, I wanted to be able to link more than 9 times to that site, per lens.

Of course I do realize I should still use caution in linking out more than 9 times to the same place: there are many scenarios where less is more. In fact, I find that sales go up with less products on a page. Still, I’m glad I made it to giant, so now the decision on how many products to list, and how to list them, is totally up to me again.

Oh, and that yellow star and badge are addictive! I think my lenses look less well without them ”

I gather that for most people this isn’t too hard. However I just happen to be one of those people who found it (and still do) difficult. There are two reasons for this, firstly I’m hopeless on the computer and secondly, I have a few personal problems, in that I’m deaf although I have a cochlear ear implant. Communication (telephone etc) is beyond me and there is nobody I can talk to about Squidoo. My family have ZERO interest in it. I’m not quick on my feet, it takes me about six weeks to think of a snappy reply. I tend to think about things first, I walk slow, I talk slow and I think slow. So because of all this I’m trying to find a niche with the Photo Gallery Module. This means, my own pictures with my own camera. I personally find this simpler to do or at least for me. I can then throw in a duel module to try and get people to talk. At the moment however I cannot make up my mind to do longer lenses or shorter one’s?

Herewith an example of a shorter one; http://www.squidoo.com/darl

“For the uninitiated, Squidoo is a great mystery. I remember being equally puzzled when I first became aware of Squidoo. All this business about squids seemed kind of silly. One of the other “Purple Squid” lensmasters said her friends thought she’d joined some kind of cult whe she became a Squidoo lensmaster. It was Evelyn Saenz who helped me understand what Squidoo really was, and not because she tried to explain it. I saw her lenses. I talked with her by email. I dawned on me that this was not only a site where one could write freely about one’s interests, but one would also have a variety of tools at hand to express one’s creativity. Besides all this, one might also earn money.

After joining and making my first lens, I began to learn the full potential of Squidoo. I began to meet other lensmasters and interact with them through various groups on Ning. I learned more about them through their lenses. I became aware of different levels of participation such as Rocket Moms and becoming a Giant Squid. I aspired to be both, and finally reached those goals. Now I feel like a real Squidoo participant. So, after my own initiation and experience, here’s what I tell my friends — especially those I’d like to recruit to join me.

Squidoo is a writing community full of wonderful people who all want to help you become a successful writer who will be able to earn some extra income. Squidoo supplies you with tools called modules for your content to help you be as creative as you want to be without having to worry about all the technical stuff you’d have to worry about if you were starting a web page from scratch. Squidoo puts you in a community of other people who like to write and who will often read what you write. You will make friends and you will be able to read and discuss each other’s writing. You will soon wish you could meet these wonderful people in person. Although there are many ways to become more involved in Squidoo, and many honors you can aspire to, you are allowed to progress at your own pace and do as much or little writing as you choose. you get out of it what you put into it. The harder you work and the more you network and learn, the more you will probably make. One of the greatest things about Squidoo is that people work hard to help each other be all they can be. Rather than competing with each other and climbing over each other to get to the top, as people often do in other organizations, people help each other out and cheer for each other when they achieve goals and win honors and make money. People realize that the success of the community as a whole helps everyone.

Since not all my friends and family write, I explain that Squidoo is also a great place to find information or just something good to read. I often go to Squidoo’s search before I go to Google, because I know Squidoo will return relevant information in a well-organized fashion on almost anything that I want to know. I tell people I meet or work with that if they really want to know me, they can find out all about what makes me tick and what’s important to me by reading my lenses.

Most of our friends were introduced to Squidoo for the first time when my daughter died in 2009 and I wrote a lens on her life and death and sent them all a link as a way of telling them about her death. It’s a great way to update friends on what’s happening in my world. All I have to do is say a bit, and then post my link to a lens that has all the pictures in it.

Squidoo is a great way to share information, keep in touch with those you care about, and express yourself. I recommend it to everyone I get to know very well as a place to find information, make new friends, find your writing voice, grow as a writer, and maybe even supplement your income. I really hope some of my friends who have writing talent will eventually see that it might be worth taking a swim in the squid ocean.”
